Hvad er en Americano?

What is an Americano?

The Americano is one of the simplest, yet most satisfying espresso-based drinks. It is made by combining espresso with hot water, offering the rich nuances of espresso in a milder and more accessible form. It typically consists of one or two espresso shots drawn into a cup and then diluted with 120-180 ml of hot water.

You can try it yourself with one of our espressos or enjoy it freshly brewed at one of our cafés across Europe.

Where does the Americano come from?

The Americano is believed to have originated during World War II, when American soldiers stationed in Italy found the local espresso too strong. By diluting it with hot water, they recreated the lighter drip coffee they were used to back home. Although the exact timeline is unclear, the term "Caffè Americano" gained popularity in the 1950s and has been a staple on coffee shop menus ever since.

Taste and texture

An Americano highlights the complexity of espresso – think chocolate, nutty, or caramel notes – while mellowing its intensity. The added water extends the espresso without masking its character. Unlike drinks such as Flat White, the Americano has no milk and no foam. It is typically served black, sometimes with a thin layer of crema on top. If you're looking for a bold coffee flavor without the heaviness of milk-based drinks, the Americano is the perfect choice.

Why choose an Americano?

There's something beautiful and straightforward about an Americano. It's ideal when you crave:
- A lighter, longer coffee without milk
- Enjoying the espresso flavor over time
- A hot or iced coffee that's easy to make at homeBonus: If you prefer your coffee cold, try making an Iced Americanoby using chilled water and serving it over ice – perfect for warmer days.
